Mufflers

It is well known that a car's engine cannot perform properly if it has a faulty muffler. If the exhaust system is worn to the point where it leaks engine gases, it can be dangerous. Escaping engine gas (carbon monoxide) is lethal and it can easily find its way into the vehicle cabin and may overcome the driver and passengers.

Apart from the dangers of leaking gases, your vehicle's performance and fuel efficiency suffers. So, look out for leaks.

EPA emission laws are strict and penalties are high. Noise or smoke pollution fines can cost more than a brand new muffler. Mr Muffler Preston can check your muffler and ensure it is working optimally.

Catalytic Converters

The catalytic converter plays a major part in th emission control systems in cars. Catalytic converters began appearing on new Australian car models in 1986. It is recommended that the catalytic converter be checked for performance after 90,000 kms.

The catalytic converter is an integral part of an exhaust system and is designed to help protect our environment by producing cleaner exhaust emissions. If your catalytic converter is damaged or defective, your vehicle will not run efficiently and you could be subject to dangerous fumes inside your vehicle. You may also experience an increase in fuel consumption.

Shock Absorbers

Don't discover your shock absorbers are worn by accident. Mr Muffler Preston can check your car's shock absorbers and suspension system for safe operation.

Signs of worn shock absorbers

  • Uneven tyre wear
  • Poor vehicle control around curves
  • Bouncy ride
  • Front end dip on rapid stops
  • Premature wear on springs which results in sagging
  • Steering wheel shimmers and wobbles

The immediate benefits of new shock absorbers include: better performance from tyres and other front end components; better vehicle control and ride; safer vehicle ride; and less tyre wear.

Brakes

Brakes are more than just pads and shoes. There is a full braking system within your vehicle designed to give maximum braking efficiency. Brake pads and shoes are one of the many parts requiring maintenance.

Faulty brake warning signs

  • Pull: car pulls to one side when the brakes are applied
  • Grab: touchy brakes that grab with the least amount of pressure
  • Drag: Sticky brakes, hot wheels or engine which seems to have lost power
  • Squeal: Brakes should operate with the minimum amount of noise. Excessive noise means they require attention
  • Low Pedal: Pedal nearly touches the floor before brakes function: this can indicate power brake trouble
  • Vibration: Brake pedal, steering wheel or entire vehicle shakes when brake is applied: may indicate the need to resurface disc brake rotors or check for faulty steering mechanism

At Mr Muffler Preston, our qualified mechanics conduct a complete braking inspection including:

  • Pads and shoes
  • All brake lines
  • Wheel cylinders and calipers
  • Master cylinder and booster operation
  • Machining of disc/brake drums if necessary
  • Brake fluid levels

Remember, your brake system depends on many different parts working together to maximise your vehicle's braking efficiency. Mr Muffler Preston suggests that your brakes be inspected every six months or every 10,000 kms (whichever comes sooner).
